Ukraine's first gold medal at the 2026 Paralympics

A para-athlete competes in a cross-country skiing event on a snowy mountain course. The athlete uses a sit-ski, a specialized sled for individuals with lower limb impairments. Dressed in a blue and white racing suit, the athlete’s bib and equipment display the number “36.” Snow-covered trees and hills form the serene winter background. The scene highlights strength, resilience, and inclusivity in sports.

The Ukrainian team opened its medal account at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo with a gold medal.

Ukrainian para-biathlete Taras Rad became the champion in the 7.5 km sprint in the sitting class. He showed the best result, ahead of his rivals from China.

The athlete completed the distance without any mistakes and finished with a time of 19:55.5, winning the first medal for Ukraine at these Games.

This is the second Paralympic gold medal in Taras Rad's career — he previously became champion at the 2018 Winter Paralympics.

Paralympians are an example of how sport, strength of spirit and self-belief can break down any barriers.

Congratulations to Taras Radia and the entire Ukrainian national team!

We are proud and will continue to cheer you on.

Together - to new victories!
