Pathways to integration: humanitarian response in Ukraine

  • The image shows the entrance to a building with a sign in Ukrainian that reads "УКРАЇНА ДЕРГАЧІВСЬКА МІСЬКА РАДА," which translates to "Ukraine Derhachivska City Council." In the foreground, there are four people: one person in a wheelchair, one person in a white vest standing in front of the entrance, another holding a cup and opening the door, and someone carrying a backpack walking towards the entrance. The building has a gray exterior with large windows and a ramp for wheelchair access. The image highlights accessibility features and the entrance to a government building.
  • The image shows a group of six people standing and sitting outdoors on a paved surface. One person is seated in a wheelchair, while the other five are standing nearby. The background includes a parked car, a brick building, and some greenery. The faces of the individuals are obscured for privacy.
  • The image shows a house with visible damage and signs of disrepair. A tree is growing very close to the house, with branches covering the windows. The exterior walls are partially covered with insulation material featuring black circular spots, while some parts of the wall are exposed, revealing brickwork. The house has broken windows, and the front yard is cluttered with various construction materials and debris, including metal sheets and wooden planks. A concrete utility pole stands in front of the house, and a car is partially visible on the right. The scene suggests the house might be undergoing renovation or has suffered damage.
  • The image depicts a scene of destruction, likely caused by a disaster or conflict. The building is heavily damaged, with a partially collapsed roof. Several people are on the roof, possibly attempting repairs or assessing the damage. The walls of the building are cracked and broken, and debris is scattered around the area. In the foreground, a person is standing amidst the rubble, while the background features trees and greenery. The image captures the aftermath of significant destruction and people's efforts to cope with the situation.
  • The image shows a group of people outdoors near a house. One person is in a wheelchair, another is wearing a white coat and holding a phone, and a third is standing nearby in a green jacket. In the background, there are two other people: one standing with arms crossed and another with hands in pockets. The setting appears to be a rural or suburban area, with a dirt path, wooden fence, and greenery. The scene seems to involve some interaction or conversation among those present.

In recent days, part of the LAODP team has been working in the communities of the Kharkiv region to implement the humanitarian project “Pathways to Integration: Humanitarian Response in Ukraine”. As part of this project, we create conditions for receiving financial assistance, facilitate the repair of damaged housing, and provide legal and psychological support to the most vulnerable categories of citizens from the frontline communities of Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts.

During the visit, we held meetings with government officials; talked to those who directly provide social services on the ground and those who receive these services. Every day we see with our own eyes how difficult it is for people to live in conditions of total danger.

Our visit to the Kharkiv region was a thoughtful and conscious step. We understood the risks involved. However, our confidence in the necessity of our mission and the desire to help those in need outweighed any fears. But none of us could have foreseen what we had to go through. Right during our stay in the Dergachiv community, an enemy attack took place. Explosions were heard in the immediate vicinity of us. We once again witnessed the grave consequences of enemy shelling. But our determination to help those in need has not waned.

It is very important that this time we had psychologists from our project with us. It is obvious that people living under constant stress need professional psychological support. Our psychologist worked with local residents to help them manage the stress, anxiety, and emotional burden that accompany difficult life situations and military conflicts.

We are sincerely grateful to our partners - Solidar Suisse (Switzerland) and Solidar Suisse Ukraine charitable foundations - for the opportunity to continue helping those who need it most.
